Daniel’s 70-Week Prophecy

1 “And the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.

3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;

4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.”

Leviticus 25:1-4

Every seventh year was supposed to be a sabbatical year, and they were supposed to let the land rest that year. For 490 years the Jewish people did not keep these sabbatical years. 70 sabbatical years were not kept.

Daniel was one of the young men whose lives were spared. He became a chief advisor to the king. After 69 years of their captivity, Daniel was reading the writings of Jeremiah the prophet, and he wrote this:

1 “In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;

2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”

Daniel 9:1-2

Look at verse 24:

“Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”

Jeremiah 29:10 says:

“For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.”

Daniel knew they only had one more year of captivity. In Nehemiah 2:1-10, Nehemiah goes before Artaxerxes the king, and asks for permission to go back and rebuild Jerusalem. God now gives Israel 490 more years, after the Babylonian captivity.

Daniel 9:25-26 says:

25 “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”

26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”

Jerusalem would be destroyed again in AD 70.

Do you know why Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD?

Luke 19:41-44 says:

41 “And when he was come near, he (Jesus) beheld the city, and wept over it,

42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.”

Daniel told them to the day when it would happen.

37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

This was known as the official declaration to be sung when the Messiah had come.

People before this tried to proclaim Him King but He would not let them. The time had not come. Now it was exactly 483 years since permission was given to restore Jerusalem. Christ held them responsible for knowing the scriptures. They didn’t take Daniel seriously when he told them the exact time Messiah would come into Jerusalem.

Zechariah 9:9 says:

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
